Basement Remodeling in Fort Madison

Basement Remodeling in Fort Madison

Basements have to be one of the most underutilized spaces in American homes. Despite their popularity, most people think of basements as nothing more than storage spaces for their junk. In fact, most people rarely spend more than 10 minutes in their basement at any given time, usually when they are dumping another knickknack in there. A cheap remodeling job can open up your basement to endless possibilities.

Why Remodel Your Basement?

First, the basement is a very versatile space. Think of it as a blank canvas which you can repurpose into whatever you desire. During the construction phase in most American homes, very little work goes into the basement areas. While the upper floors are partitioned into rooms, the basement is usually very 'open-plan' in nature which you can design into the kind of room you want.

There are very strict zoning laws when it comes to the structural integrity of houses with basement areas. If the basement was approved, then you can rest assured that it is a safe space to be in. If your basement has an external access door/hatch, then it needs to be secured to protect you from external threats. As far as the house collapsing on you though, have no worries, the basement is safe.

It is also very cheap to have basement remodeling done, especially in comparison with the cost of adding an extension to your home. If you are strapped for room, building an extension to your home is infinitely more expensive than simply remodeling your basement. Most of the work, such as plumbing and electrical wiring will (for the most part) have already been done for you. Most basement remodeling jobs involve cleaning, aerating and some basic cosmetic work such as painting and partitioning.

What Can Your Basement Be Used For?

The basement is a perfect space for a bedroom. Its large size means that you can include a toilet/bathroom within the basement to service the occupant(s) of the new bedroom. While most basements don't have external windows, fluorescent lighting is an energy efficient way to brighten up the space. If the basement has an external access doorway, then it can be remodeled into a one-room living space (much like a studio apartment) and rented out for extra income. The external door means that you, and your tenant, will not have to share the same doors.

If you have children, then your basement can be remodeled into a play area. The walls can be painted in bright colors, cabinets can be provided to store the kids’ toys and board games, and a TV can also be installed. Your kids, and their friends can have their own safe space to play without interrupting the rest of the household. The proximity of the basement to the rest of your house means that it will only take a few minutes for an adult to pop in to ensure that everything is fine in the kids' area.

If you, or a member of your family, are avidly engaged in a hobby; then the basement can be the perfect hobby room. With adequate lighting and a couple of easels, you have a painting room. Add soundproofing material when carrying out your basement remodeling and the space can be used to practice a musical instrument or as a sound studio.
